Building Bridges – Building Community

Oak Grove Spring 2011_group

If you asked AmeriCorps member, Ashlee Murphy, how she supported youth leadership development and fostered partnerships across school zones and multiple boundaries she probably would be surprised that she accomplished that in just 6 months. But that’s exactly what Ashlee has done for Embrace Richmond, Oak Grove Elementary School and Monacan High School.  Ashlee provided the foundation and coordination for a pilot after-school program connecting elementary school girls to high school girls. Six juniors from Monacan High School met with 12 grade school girls from Oak Grove Elementary school one day a week teaching dance, making art and having fun together. Ashlee and the Monacan students filled the desire of the Oak Grove elementary Communities In Schools coordinator, Jennifer Moreno, to provide an after-school enrichment opportunity for girls who were on a waiting list for a popular dance program. Ashlee supported the vision of the high school girls by providing materials, transportation and advocacy with school representatives. We celebrate Ashlee Murphy, AmeriCorps member for her skill and commitment. Job well done!
